How to use a ladder safely

Ladder Safety Tips for Gutter Cleaning

Blocked gutters can lead to a host of problems, from water damage to foundation issues. But before you grab a ladder and start scooping leaves, take a moment to prioritise safety. Gutter cleaning and repairs can be risky, especially if you're not ladder savvy.

Here's a guide with some essential ladder safety tips to help you climb smart and stay safe while tackling those blocked gutters:

1. Choose the Right Ladder

Select the correct size ladder for the property you're working on. If you have a ladder that is too short, you're going to be tempted to stretch, which is one of the leading causes of ladder accidents.

2. Inspect Your Ladder

Before starting work, inspect your ladder. Check that none of the rungs (the steps you stand on) are bent or missing, as these provide the ladder's strength for climbing safely.

3. Position the Ladder Correctly

When extending the ladder, ensure it's positioned at the right angle. This is the 1:4 rule, meaning your ladder should come out 1 unit for every 4 units up. For example, if your ladder is extended 4 meters up, it should come out around 1 meter. Using a ladder stabiliser will help keep your ladder at the correct angle and prevent slipping.

4. Maintain Three Points of Contact

Always ensure you have three points of contact with the ladder when climbing. This can be two feet and one hand or, when climbing higher, one foot and two hands as you reach the required height.

5. Ensure the Ladder is Level

Uneven ground can make the ladder unstable. Never climb an uneven ladder. Use a ladder leveling mat to even out the height. Don't be tempted to use an off-cut of wood, as this can slip and isn't stable.

6. Avoid the Top Rungs

Never use the top three rungs of a ladder as steps. The top rungs are not designed for standing and doing so can cause the ladder to slip.

7. Use an Anti-Slip Device

If you must place your ladder on a slippery surface like decking, ensure it has an anti-slip device attached. Additionally, have someone stand at the base of the ladder to prevent it from slipping while you work.

8. Keep Work to Short Durations

Gutter cleaning and gutter repairs can be time-consuming. Take regular breaks and limit the time spent on a ladder to 30 minutes at a time.

9. Don't Lean Against the Gutter

Never rest your ladder against the gutter. The gutter is usually made of uPVC and isn't designed to support a ladder's weight. The ladder can slip, and you could break the guttering. Instead, use a ladder stand-off, which attaches to the top of the ladder and keeps it away from the gutter while allowing access for cleaning.

10. Wear Suitable Footwear

Footwear is important when climbing a ladder. Avoid footwear with no grip. Ladders can be slippery if wet, so good footwear will keep you safe while climbing or standing.

Following these simple ladder safety tips will greatly reduce the risks associated with using ladders to clean out gutters or repair or replace your guttering. Remember to always prioritise ladder safety when attempting any gutter work. Having the correct tools for cleaning gutters is also essential.
